Mainstream

Above are just few of the things that have kept people (including myself) away from the world, spending effort, time, and should I say, their batteries, in these apps. They have become so popular and hence have become mainstream. But after some time, we start to hear these statements...

"It was cool until it became mainstream."
"I don't like that anymore, it's too mainstream."

A person likes something but then automatically dislikes it when it becomes, you guessed it right, mainstream. We get that. Only, it gets awkward when in the pursuit of "coolness," "not liking mainstream" then becomes the cool thing. Consequently, if being cool is not where all the people are, then "to not like mainstream" automatically becomes uncool now. Are you still with me?

(Fortunately, I haven't used Instagram and Angry Birds yet, so I haven't stepped into the "mainstream" nor the "dislike" stage. I remain cool. Haha)

In another light, basing our personal identity on the system of the world, for me, is the thing that might not be cool for us. We do not need to be doing what everybody else is doing, nor do we need to distance ourselves from them to stay cool - if we know that in Christ, we are accepted, we are secure, and we are significant.

Colossians 2:10 says that I am complete in Christ and that's all I need to know in my heart. I wish, though, for the time when everyone knows this truth  - so popular that it becomes mainstream, so good a truth that nobody would ever dislike it, and then it will remain to be the coolest thing. Ha.
