I just got home from our super duper fun Singapore trip. I actually wanted to blog this before leaving but time (and Philippine internet service) didn't allow me to so here goes!
My first tip is to clean your room before doing anything else. Haha. Packing may sometimes be chaotic and you just don't want your room to be a total mess before or during packing. Prevention is better than cure. So clean up first before adding to the mess!
Also,
I recommend covering your bed with a clean sheet. If you're like me who ends up throwing everything on the bed, then don't forget this step. Also, I'm
sure all you want to do upon arriving home is to stay in bed and rest, and
changing dirty sheets is not a good nor a fun welcome home greeting.
Next tip is from my boyfriend and it's for packing small portions of product. In my case, petroleum jelly. I can't bring the actual bottle because it's too big for a 4 day vacation, so I used an extra contact lens case.
I have a ton of extra contact lens case because I always get a free one when I buy solution. I've been wanting to find a way to re-use them and this was perfect. I cleaned it and used a clean teaspoon to transfer content. I actually ended up using the back of the teaspoon. I also just added a washi tape on top as marker so I won't mistake it with my actual lens.
Another tip is for packing some of your toiletries.
Always remove your toiletries from the box to save space. Also, you can use and re-use small containers like the clear box I have above. I previously used it for cotton balls (for longer trips where I'll need more) but I used it now for my soap instead, and used the packaging from a make-up brush for cotton balls and cotton buds.
Another tip would be for your make-up. I usually have 2 kits, one for getting ready in the morning, and another super small kit to bring around while on tour.
The photo on the upper left are my basic everyday essentials. I packed the powder, lipstick, and oil film in a small pouch which is actually my DIY napkin pouch and used 2 cord organizers to seal it. All the others I placed in a small clear pouch (giveaway from a beauty product, I think).
Next tip is for all your chargers. Here I also used 2 kits and just like with the make-up, these are stuff I can leave in the hostel and 1 pack which I need to bring around with me.
Portable charger, iPhone/iPad wire, and earphones are my essentials and I put it in a make-up brush pouch, small enough to easily bring around. Chargers for my camera and portable charger, and other adapters would go in a bigger pouch.
Next tip would be for clothes. I am not a light packer, but I am an organized one. Hehe.
I
always use these 4 pack (I think the 4th one is in my car haha) mesh cubes I got from Ikea a few years back and I have
been loving them. I like that it's not really mesh. I mean, contents
inside would not get dirty because it has an inner clear lining/sheet
inside.
I was only able to use 2 out of 4 bags - 1 big and 1 small cube for all my clothing for 4 days. Win.
Next is put those shopping bags to good use by utilizing them for your shoes and slippers. This is a good idea if you don't have shoe bags/cases. My Ikea travel packs comes with one but I use it also for clothes when I need to bring more so I recycle eco bags for shoes. I only brought 1 pair of slippers and another pair of shoes and this small shopping bag was perfect.
Lastly, I have this jewelry organizer gifted to me last Christmas. I wanted to put all other essentials here but thought that it was a waste of space because I wasn't able to use it fully. I ended up transferring my make-up here and this set-up was much better and more efficient.
So basically...
1. Use smaller pouches to categorize things. I love love using organizers before I throw everything into my luggage. It's an effective way to stay organized while living off of your bag for a few days.
2. Search around your house for cases/bags you can use to pack stuff in.
3. Bring only your essentials and make 2 kits - 1 to bring on your carry-on, and 1 you can leave in your hotel.
That's it. Here's a GIF image on how I packed it in my small luggage :D
Please don't mind all the food on top of all the organized pouches. I'm a baon type of girl! :))))
